CRITICAL: leather sourcing
Verify VEG-TANNED leather only. Chrome-tanned releases toxic chromium when laser-cut. If the supplier can't confirm tanning method, walk away.
Reliable sources: Tandy Leather, Wickett & Craig, ETM Leather, Buckle Guy. Avoid generic Amazon "leather" listings (often chrome-tanned or bonded).
Step 1: design the file
- Lightburn workspace dimensioned to wallet size (typically 4×3.5" closed, 4×7" open).
- Place tool-layer outline matching the wallet's engravable surface.
- Add monogram or text element. For traditional bifold: position centered on the front face, ~1cm from edges.
- Suggest 2-3 fonts to customer (script for elegant, block for modern, serif for classic).
- Add optional decorative border or accent.
Step 2: customer proof
- Send digital proof showing design positioned on a wallet image.
- Confirm spelling, font choice, position.
- Discuss with customer: "Engraving is permanent. Leather darkens slightly around the engrave, that's normal."
- Get explicit approval.
Step 3: prepare wallet
- Open wallet flat.
- Wipe surface with damp cloth (not wet), removes dust.
- Apply painter's tape over the engrave area. Press firmly. Edges align with the engrave boundary.
- The tape catches smoke residue and gives a cleaner final result.
Step 4: mount in jig
- Use a flat jig or cardboard backer to keep wallet flat.
- Magnets / weights at corners to prevent shifting.
- Set bed height, wallet is thin, so honeycomb / pin table works fine.
Step 5: focus and frame
- Focus on the leather surface.
- Frame the design over the wallet.
- Verify alignment with the tool-layer rectangle.

Step 8: run engrave
- Open Preview. Verify time estimate (~5-10 min).
- Press Start.
- Engrave runs. Smoke is significant on leather, extraction must be running.
Step 9: post-engrave
- Wait for fume extraction to clear.
- Carefully peel painter's tape, takes most smoke residue with it.
- Wipe surface with dry cloth.
- Inspect under daylight LED, engrave should be dark brown to black, with crisp edges.
Step 10: optional finishing
- Leather conditioner (Saddle Soap, Lexol, or natural beeswax mix), restores any oils lost during engraving. Apply, work in with cloth, buff dry.
- Skip if customer prefers raw leather aesthetic.
Step 11: package
- Photograph for portfolio.
- Place wallet in original packaging or premium gift box.
- Add hand-written note + business card.
- Ship in padded mailer.

Below $55 retail on a budget wallet = loss

Pricing under $55 retail means you're losing money on every wallet sold after Etsy fees (~12-15% combined: $0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction on item + shipping + ~3% + $0.25 payment processing) and shipping. Important caveat: once you cross Etsy's offsite-ads $10K trailing-revenue tripwire, an additional 12-15% offsite-ads fee on offsite-driven sales applies (and you can't opt out).
