AI Workflow: From Idea to Engraved Piece in 30 Minutes

End-to-end pipeline: wedding monogram example
Goal: a customer wants an engraved walnut cutting board with their last name "Whitfield" + an art-deco floral border, ready to engrave.
Step 1: Ideate in Midjourney (5-10 min)
Prompt example (Midjourney v6/v7 syntax):

Why each modifier matters:
- "black ink on white background": keeps the output bilevel-friendly. Easier to vectorize cleanly.
- "--style raw": disables Midjourney's stylization layer; gets you closer to a designable asset.
- "--no shading --no gradient": Midjourney's negative-prompt syntax. Eliminates the soft shadows that complicate threshold conversion.
- "--ar 1:1": square aspect ratio is easiest to vectorize.
Generate 4-8 variations. Pick the cleanest one. Use Midjourney's "Vary (Strong)" on the winner to refine.
Step 2: Add the actual name with Ideogram (or Photoshop) (5 min)
Midjourney still struggles with specific text rendering. Two approaches:
- Approach A: Take the Midjourney monogram frame to Ideogram. Prompt: "art deco family monogram with the text 'Whitfield' centered in the frame [reference: paste/upload the Midjourney image]." Ideogram nails the text.
- Approach B (more control): Bring the Midjourney frame into Photoshop / Affinity / Illustrator. Type "Whitfield" in your chosen art-deco display font. Position. Done in 90 seconds if you've picked a font ahead of time.
Step 3: Vectorize for laser cutting paths (5-10 min)
Most engraving doesn't need pure vector, Lightburn happily engraves rasters via Image mode. But for Line/Fill modes (cleaner edges, faster runtime), you need vectors. Tools:

Step 4: Final cleanup in your vector editor (3-5 min)
Always do a final pass:
- Delete stray nodes and tiny artifacts (auto-trace always leaves some).
- Join broken paths if you're going to engrave Line mode (Lightburn → Edit → Auto-Join Selected Shapes; tolerance 0.05mm).
- Verify no overlapping shapes that would re-engrave the same area twice. (Edit → Delete Duplicates.)
- Check the final dimensions, set explicitly to match the cutting board (e.g., 6"×6").
3D relief / depth-map AI workflow
For 3D engraving (see Image Modes and Relief Coin Engraving), you need a grayscale depth map: white = highest, black = deepest, smooth transitions in between.
Path A: AI generates the source image, you convert to depth
- Generate a high-res image in Midjourney (e.g., a relief portrait, a coin design, a topographic-style art).
- Convert to depth map using one of:
- MiDaS / Depth Anything models (free, run via Replicate.com or HuggingFace Spaces, search "depth anything online"). Upload image → get grayscale depth map.
- Photoshop Neural Filters → Depth Blur: exposes the underlying depth pass; export as grayscale PNG.
- Stable Diffusion ControlNet (depth): outputs depth maps as part of the generation pipeline.
- Refine in Photoshop: Image → Adjustments → Levels to spread tones across the full 0-255 range. Smart Sharpen mildly to reinforce edges without creating hot spots.
- Run in Lightburn with Image Mode → Grayscale (NOT Threshold or Dither). DPI ~300 for CO2 with 1.5" lens. Save winning settings to your Material Library.
Path B: AI generates the depth map directly
Newer Stable Diffusion ControlNet models can output a usable depth map directly when prompted with depth-aware language. Example Stable Diffusion prompt: "bas relief sculpture of a roaring lion, grayscale depth map, smooth gradients, no shading, white = highest, black = deepest."
Quality varies. Path A (generate beauty image, then extract depth) is more reliable for production work in 2026.
AI image upscaling: turn 600px into 4K
Customers email you a tiny photo of their pet for a memorial engraving. You need ~3000px+ for a 5"×5" engrave at 300 DPI.

AI for Etsy / marketing copy
ChatGPT (or Claude / Gemini) speeds up listing copy dramatically. The trick: give the AI YOUR shop voice + structure, not generic "write a product description for X."
The high-leverage prompt template:

This prompt gives the AI structure, voice, and constraint. The output needs minor polish but skips the blank-page problem.
The seven AI pitfalls that ruin laser shop output
- Hallucinated text. Midjourney (especially) will generate gibberish letters confidently. Always verify text is correct before sending to the laser. Use Ideogram or Photoshop for text overlays you NEED to be right.
- The "AI tell", six fingers, melted faces, illogical detail. Generated portraits often have subtle errors that look fine on screen but become embarrassing at 6"×8" engraved scale. Check thoroughly before engraving on a customer's $400 walnut board.
- Copyright and IP exposure. Midjourney trained on copyrighted material. Generating "Disney-style princess" or "Pokemon-style monster" can produce derivative work that triggers trademark takedowns on Etsy. Stick to original / abstract designs for stock listings; use AI for inspiration not literal copying.
- Style ownership disputes. Generating "in the style of [living artist]" is legally and ethically gray. Avoid name-checking living artists in prompts for commercial use.
- AI-generated text in titles / descriptions = generic-feeling listings. If everyone uses the same ChatGPT prompts, listings start to read identically. Edit AI output for genuine voice; use AI for first draft, not final.
- Resolution mismatch. Midjourney max output is currently around 2048×2048 native. For a 6"×6" engrave at 300 DPI you need 1800×1800 minimum, fine. For a 12"×18" at 300 DPI you need 3600×5400, Midjourney native won't cover it; upscale before engraving.
- Smooth-gradient AI images destroy threshold conversion. AI tends to output very smooth gradients. Beautiful as a photo, terrible as a Lightburn Threshold input. Either bump contrast hard before threshold-conversion, OR engrave as Grayscale image mode (which uses the gradient as depth/density information).
The 30-minute production pipeline
- 0:00-0:05: Customer brief + Midjourney prompt iteration (4 prompts → pick winner)
- 0:05-0:10: Add real text (Ideogram or Photoshop)
- 0:10-0:15: Vectorize (Vectorizer.AI or Lightburn Trace)
- 0:15-0:20: Cleanup in vector editor + size to part
- 0:20-0:25: Test on scrap; verify settings
- 0:25-0:30: Send proof to customer; await approval
Time savings vs traditional design: 4-6 hours → 30 minutes. AI doesn't replace design skill; it removes the blank-page friction so a competent operator can ship 5-10× the design output per day.
