Wood: Diode Settings & Species
Wood is the diode's strongest material. Engraves cleanly across all common species. Cuts thinner stock (3-6mm) reliably; goes slower than CO2 but produces equivalent edge quality.
Build a per-species test card library
Diode settings shift noticeably between species (cherry burns warm, walnut shows low contrast, maple takes fine detail, oak fights you). The fastest way to dial yours in is the Ocooch Hardwoods 18-species sample pack, run a 3×3 power/speed grid on each species, photograph the winner, and tape the cards to the wall. One $30 sample pack saves weeks of guess-and-check on customer orders.
Best species for diode
| Species | Engrave contrast | Cut difficulty | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birch ply | Excellent | Easy | Top choice for sign work and prototyping. |
| Maple | Excellent | Medium | Premium for portraits and fine detail. |
| Cherry | Excellent (warm) | Easy | Beautiful for plaques. |
| Walnut | Good (dark base) | Easy | Limited contrast; best for light designs. |
| Basswood | Good | Easy | Soft; cheap; good for testing. |
| Pine | Variable | Difficult | Resin pockets cause inconsistent burn. |
| Oak | Variable | Difficult | Heavy grain overwhelms detail. |
| MDF | Even | Easy | Functional; no grain character. |
Cutting settings: typical 20W marketing diode (~5W optical)
| Stock | Speed | Power | Passes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3mm birch ply | 200 mm/min | 100% | 2-3 |
| 3mm basswood | 300 mm/min | 100% | 2 |
| 3mm MDF | 200 mm/min | 100% | 3 |
| 3mm cherry / walnut | 180 mm/min | 100% | 3-4 |
| 4mm birch ply | 150 mm/min | 100% | 3-4 |
| 6mm birch ply | 120 mm/min | 100% | 5-7 |
| 6mm MDF | 100 mm/min | 100% | 6-8 |
For 40W (~13W optical) diodes: roughly halve passes OR double speed.
Engraving settings
| Substrate | Speed | Power | Line interval |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birch ply | 4000 mm/min | 25-35% | 0.10 mm |
| Cherry | 3500 mm/min | 28-38% | 0.10 mm |
| Maple | 4000 mm/min | 22-32% | 0.10 mm |
| Walnut | 3000 mm/min | 35-45% | 0.10 mm |
| Basswood | 5000 mm/min | 18-25% | 0.10 mm |
| MDF | 3500 mm/min | 30-40% | 0.10 mm |
Pre-engrave prep
- Mask with painter's tape (3M ScotchBlue 2090) before engraving. Catches smoke residue. Peel off after, cleanest engrave possible.
- Sand lightly (220-grit) for new wood, removes surface oils that resist absorption.
- Acclimate: let wood sit in your shop overnight if it came from a warm warehouse / cold delivery truck. Moisture content varies engrave depth.
Air assist on diode
Aftermarket air assist on a diode is a transformative upgrade for wood:
- Cleaner cut edges (less char).
- Faster cuts (smoke doesn't block beam).
- Lens stays cleaner, most-cited reason.
- Kits: $30-80; install in 30 minutes.
Multi-pass for thick wood
For 8mm+ wood, multi-pass with Z-step (motorized Z required):
- Set Z-step per pass: 1-2mm.
- Run multiple passes; head drops between each.
- Total time: ~3-5× single-thin-pass.
For fixed-focus diodes (most): manually re-focus between passes if you need 8mm+ cuts. Or accept that 8mm+ is past your machine's sweet spot.
Common pitfalls
- Burn-through on engrave: power too high or speed too slow. Drop power 5%, speed 500 mm/min.
- Faint engrave: focus drift. Re-focus.
- Inconsistent engrave on real wood: knot or resin pocket. Move design or accept the variation.
- Charcoal-black edges on cuts: air assist absent or insufficient. Add air or accept the look.
