Diode Maintenance
Diodes are mechanically simpler than CO2 but more exposed to dust, smoke, and accidental damage. The lens picks up residue fast, cleaning is the dominant maintenance task.
Daily (per session)
- Visual lens inspection. Smoke residue accumulates fast. Clean if visible.
- Wipe down work surface.
- Check air assist line for blockages (if installed).
Weekly
- Lens cleaning, proper procedure (see below).
- Wipe X and Y rails with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Check belt tension, slacking belts cause skipped engrave lines.
Monthly
- Lubricate X and Y rails with light machine oil (3-in-1 or sewing machine oil). Avoid heavy greases.
- Check timing belt teeth for wear.
- Tighten any loose fasteners on the gantry.
- Inspect the diode head's mounting screws, vibration loosens them.
- Verify focus calibration with a test pulse.
Quarterly
- Full deep clean of bed, work surface, gantry rails.
- Inspect the diode head, replace if you see darkened lens coating, scratched lens, or damaged emitter housing.
- Re-tension belts.
- Check connecting cables for chafing, open-frame design exposes cables to wear.
Yearly
- Replace belts (preventive).
- Replace diode head if power has dropped noticeably (most diode heads degrade ~10-20% per year of heavy use).
- Verify the work surface is still flat, wood beds warp; replace if visibly bowed.
Lens cleaning: the right way
- Power off laser. Wait for diode to cool.
- Use a blower bulb (Giottos Rocket Blaster) FIRST to lift loose dust.
- Apply 2-3 drops of reagent-grade isopropyl alcohol (anhydrous, 99%+) to a fresh lens tissue.
- SINGLE direction wipe across the lens. Use a fresh portion of tissue per pass.
- Inspect under flashlight angle, if streaks visible, repeat with new tissue.
- NEVER use cotton swabs (fibers leave residue) or paper towels (scratches).
Diode head replacement
Diode heads have a finite life. Symptoms of failing head:
- Power output dropping noticeably (engraves softer than before with same settings).
- Visible darkening on the lens that doesn't clean off.
- Star-shaped or distorted laser dot pattern.
- Inconsistent firing (skipped sections of an engrave).
Replacement heads: $50-300 depending on power and brand. Most are user-replaceable in 15 minutes. The machine frame survives many head replacements.

Air assist maintenance
- Check the air pump for clogs (the small inlet filter) monthly.
- Replace inline filter element yearly.
- Verify nozzle is clear, debris accumulates.
