Daily CO2 Workflow in Lightburn

Once your CO2 is calibrated and Lightburn is set up, every job follows the same rhythm. Build the muscle memory and you'll go from idea to first cut in under five minutes.

The 12-step CO2 loop

  1. Place material on the bed: honeycomb, knife table, or pin/aluminum riser depending on material type.
  2. Use a jig if it's a repeatable job. Same Z height every time.
  3. Open the file in Lightburn or paste from clipboard.
  4. Position the design over your material on screen. Match Start From mode to your workflow (Absolute / Current Position / User Origin).
  5. Set focus: autofocus button if your machine has it, or manually with the focus puck for the active lens.
  6. Apply layer settings from Material Library or test result. Confirm Mode (Line/Fill/Image) and Output toggles.
  7. Configure air assist per layer, high for wood cuts, low for acrylic, low/off for engraving.
  8. Press Frame (F4 / F1): head traces the bounding box. Confirm it lands on the material with no overshoot.
  9. Run Preview (Alt+P): final sanity check. Time estimate, traversal path, layer order.
  10. Press Start: first 30 seconds observed for tone, smoke, sparks.
  11. Inspect with the lid open after the job ends and air clears (60s extraction recommended). Check edge quality, depth, char.
  12. Save settings to Material Library if it's a repeatable result. Tag with material lot.

The Frame button: your most-used control

Frame traces the design's bounding box (or convex hull on Lightburn 2.0+) at low or no power. Always frame before running:

  • Confirms the design lands on your material, not off the edge.
  • Lets you nudge the head if the alignment is off.
  • Catches scaling errors before you've cut into the wrong size piece.

Default to Bounding Box framing. Use Rubber Band (Convex Hull) if your design is irregular and Bounds wastes too much red-dot motion.

Preview window habits

Open Preview (Alt+P) before every job:

  • Check time estimate: sets expectations.
  • Watch traversal moves (red lines), excessive red = poor layer ordering. Run Optimize Cut Path.
  • Verify layer order: engrave layers should run BEFORE cut layers, otherwise the part falls free before the engrave finishes.
  • Use the time slider to scrub through complex jobs and verify nothing is engraving in the wrong order.

Emergency stop habits

  • Hand on E-stop or F2 (Stop) at the start of any new material. If you see flame, smoke flare, or unexpected behavior, stop immediately.
  • Don't reach into the cabinet while a job runs.
  • Never run a job unattended. Exception: production batches you've personally watched succeed multiple times AND have fire suppression in place.

Multi-pass workflow

For thick cuts requiring multiple passes:

  1. Set Number of Passes in the layer (Lightburn handles repetition automatically).
  2. Don't move material between passes, Lightburn keeps Z and X/Y consistent.
  3. For Z-step (lowering Z per pass), set Z Step per Pass in the Advanced tab. Common values: 1-2mm for thick acrylic, 0.5-1mm for wood relief.

File handoff

Two ways to send a job to the laser:

  • Start (run live): file streams to controller; computer must stay on and connected for the duration.
  • Send (transfer to memory): file saved to Ruida controller's onboard memory. Run from controller's File List even if Lightburn is closed. Best for production.
